Amir Khan beats Paul McCloskey via 6th round technical decision

Amir Khan beats Paul McCloskey

WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KOs) defeated previously unbeaten Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 KOs) of Ireland via a six round technical decision at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England. The fight was halted in the sixth round after an accidental clash of heads opened up a nasty cut above the left eye of McCloskey. All three judges had the scores at 60-54.

The stoppage was controversial as the Irish southpaw was appealing to the referee not to stop the fight. Barry Hearn, McCloskey's promoter is very disappointed with the ringside doctor's ruling. He threatens to dispute the decision with the British Boxing Board. Hearn believes McCloskey deserves a rematch but Khan said he's not interested.

"I'm looking for bigger things like a fight with Timothy Bradley. I was beating easy. I think he took some good punches and surprised me and Freddie, but I think if the fight would have continued I would have hurt him bad. Nobody wants to see him get hurt bad. I would have knocked him out," Khan said.

Freddie Roach announced that his next plan for Amir is to fight Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KOs), the undefeated WBC and WBO light welterweight champion. They're also considering the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr and the winner of Berto versus Ortiz fight as some of their options as Khan's next opponent.

"I think we could face Timothy Bradley to unify the division. He could go up to welterweight and fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. We could even fight the winner of Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz. We are ready to step up and fight the best opponents that we can," Roach said.
