Amir Khan teaches Paulie Malignaggi a painful boxing lesson

Khan beats Malignaggi

WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KOs) made a sensational US debut by brutally stopping former champion Paulie Malignaggi (27-4) in round 11 of their one-sided match held at the Madison Square Garden in New York. Khan used his height and reach advantage to control the fight. Khan appeared to have the advantage in every department especially in movement and hand speed that allowed him to throw the better combinations and outbox Malignaggi in every round.

By the middle rounds, Khan was starting to totally dominate the bout. Malignaggi's face was swollen like a rotten tomato that the ringside doctor had to take a concerned close look at Malignaggi before the start of round 11, but Malignaggi insisted that he wanted to continue the fight. With Malignaggi's back against the ropes, Khan threw a flurry of unanswered shots, and referee Steve Smoger finally stepped-in to stop the fight at 1:25 of the 11th round. Malignaggi did not argue with the decision and congratulated Khan on his victory.

After the loss, Paulie said Amir reminds him of a "younger Malignaggi". "Amir was very busy, a lot of angles and kept changing distance. When I was younger, I used to fight like him but as I get older I hurt my hands and I started slowing it down and picking my shots more. I ran into a close of myself from when I was younger but he was stronger, bigger and faster. He was very busy, I couldn't keep up with him I guess. I couldn't get the distance right. Amir wanted it, he stayed busy and I give him a lot of credit", said Malignaggi.
