Chaos explodes at Khan-Malignaggi weigh-in
Written by Jason Kingsley Friday, 14 May 2010 22:00

The trashtalk between Amir Khan and Paulie Malignaggi turned to chaos during the weigh-in ahead of their WBA light welterweight championship fight at the Madison Square Garden in New York. The defending champion Khan from Britain and challenger Malignaggi of Bronx, New York had weighed-in in the midst of a boisterous crowd as a group of fans chanted Amir's name and booed Paulie. When the two fighters went head-to-head for pictures, they deliberately touched heads and were seen exchanging verbal abuse before they began to push each other back. No punches were thrown by the two but chaos exploded when fans stormed the stage and engaged in a mass brawl. Both fighters were pulled from the scene through separate exits.
Paulie Malignaggi's promoter Lou DiBella, who was very furious at what happened screamed: "This is amateur! The public was not supposed to be here. One more thing like this and I'm pulling (Paulie) out of the fight. My guy got roughed up by his (Amir) people. Some gentleman. Go back to England." Anthony Cantanzaro, Malignaggi's representative, said: "Khan's people came in and started fighting on the stage."
Khan said he felt that the loudmouth Malignaggi had crossed the line when he questioned Manny Pacquiao's hesitation to accept Floyd Mayweather's blood testing demands. Khan added that he wanted to make Malignaggi pay for his malicious accusations that he and stablemate Pacquiao are taking performance-enhancing drugs.
"He was saying I was on drugs as well and how big I had gone but working with Alex Ariza and looking at how my body's changed, to be honest I've gone a lot slimmer. I was a big, big lightweight and I've trimmed down and made my legs bigger. What people like Paulie Malignaggi don't realize is the work ethic and the training that me and Manny put into our work. We work so hard and it just disrespects the trainers because they help us so much, push us 110% and do a wonderful job with us", Khan said.
