Donaire vs Montiel -- What awaits the winner?
Written by Angelo Villanueva Tuesday, 15 February 2011 14:20

On February 19, Nonito Donaire Jr. will be tested against the toughest challenge in his boxing career, a Mexican boxing great and three division champion knockout artist Fernando Montiel. Nonito may have beaten the strong but defenseless Vic Darchinyan a couple of years ago, but Fernando belongs to a different league. Montiel, at 31 years of age, is very much in his prime, and is probably the most dangerous opponent for anyone in the bantamweight division. Montiel is also far more experienced, and has faced better competition than Donaire has ever had.
Fernando Montiel is one of those few complete fighters -- has a great power, good defense, great chin, excellent footwork and mobility. Montiel, sporting an excellent record of 44 wins, 34 via knockout, with only 2 losses and 2 draws, is the current WBC and WBO bantamweight champion, former WBO super flyweight and WBO flyweight champion. Donaire may have height, reach, and speed advantage against Montiel, but the latter has skills and experience to counter those.
Both are top 10 pound for pound fighters, and either is very capable of beating the other by knockout. At this point, it is very difficult for me, and probably to many boxing fans, to make the right prediction of the outcome of this fight. The only thing I am sure of is that something big is waiting for the victor -- he could be the next big superstar of boxing. Will it be Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire Jr. or Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel?
