Is Donaire a lucky puncher or just good at beating handicapped opponents?
Written by Miguel Perez Sunday, 20 February 2011 08:30

Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KOs) luckily defeated another handicapped opponent in Fernando Montiel (44-3-2, 34 KOs). Montiel looked very weak, sluggish, and was obviously weight-drained during the fight. Aside from Montiel being a smaller and older opponent, Donaire and his camp also made sure that they have all the advantages going into the fight.
According to a very reliable source of mine, Montiel was forced into a 3-week strict diet just to make the weight. Training is very difficult for a boxer while he is trying to lose weight at the same time, especially when he does it in a legit way like depriving himself of proper nutrition, like in the case of Cochulito.
As for Donaire, I am quite unsure of what he did to make weight. We know that he acquired the services of Victor Conte to help him prepare for this fight. We also know that Victor Conte has a company which produces steroids and other illegal things like that. Just to clear things up, I am not insinuating that Donaire is on steroids, just maybe.
In addition to the above arguments, I also believe that the fight was prematurely stopped. I saw that fight as fairly even during those two rounds until Nonito hit Fernando with that lucky haymaker. The referee could have given Montiel a couple of seconds more to recover, and he could have thrown counter-punches that would destroy Donaire.
But since the referee's decision is final, we can't do anything anymore except ask this intelligent question: Is Nonito Donaire just a lucky puncher, or just good at beating handicapped and weight-drained opponents, or every dog has his lucky day?
