Miguel Cotto butchers Antonio Margarito for a 10th round TKO win
Written by Angelo Villanueva Sunday, 04 December 2011 06:32

Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KOs) used the right eye of Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27 KOs) as a target, and after 9 rounds of beating, that eye appeared very grotesque that the doctors had to stop the fight. Cotto retains his WBA junior middleweight title and gets his revenge against the same opponent who stopped him in the eleventh round back in July 2008. It was a very exciting fight at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, and the crowd stood up and cheered occasionally.
Cotto was landing fast and accurate punches in the first two rounds but Margarito being very tough as usual took the punches quite well. However, a cut opened up above the right eye of Margarito in the third round. Margarito, known for being a pressure fighter, continued coming forward and targeted Cotto's body. The two exchanged heavy blows but Cotto was more accurate and seemed to have landed the harder punches.
Cotto used his superior ring generalship to control the pace of the fight in the fourth round as he landed hard combinations while making Margarito miss with his counter-punches. Cotto started boxing smart by using hit-and-run tactics against his bigger opponent who seemed to be hoping that Miguel would continue exchanging shots with him.
The fight was starting to get tighter as the rounds went on. In round seven, Margarito began picking up the pace as he started to land more while Cotto appeared to be tired. Cotto used his reserve tank of energy and impeccable footwork to stay out of harm's way as Margarito chased him and attempted to land some big shots.
In the eighth round, Margarito's right eye was swollen shut and the ringside doctors were very on stopping the fight. Margarito knew that the fight would be stopped anytime due to his bubble eye so he put more effort in chasing and throwing more punches to try to win by knockout. Cotto continued to stay away from exchanges and Margarito almost couldn't get to him. When he did, Cotto would clinch him, hit his eye and then move away again.
This fight clearly showed that without loaded gloves, Cotto is the superior fighter among the two. I believe that part of Margarito's demise was his trainer's decision not to stop the fight when that same right eye was already almost plucked out during his fight against Manny Pacquiao. Margarito should retire now and Robert Garcia should find another job because of his terrible job on both Margarito and Brandon Rios.
As for Cotto, I wish him the best and I hope he continues to give us exciting fights like this. A fight against either Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez or Floyd Mayweather Jr would be very appealing to the public. I think the two would be very willing to fight Cotto, but Floyd Mayweather will probably duck him again just because he is from Puerto Rico, and Puerto Rico is too far away.
