Paul McCloskey might just ruin Amir Khan's plans
Written by Thomas Clausen Tuesday, 01 March 2011 11:29

After Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KOs) was gifted a decision victory against Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KOs) to win the WBA super world light welterweight championship last December 11, boxing fans expected Amir to start facing top fighters in his division. Boxing experts like myself were really excited about the thought of a unification bout between Khan and WBC/WBO champion Timothy Bradley (27-0, 11 KOs), but we were surprised when Khan and his team chose to fight Ireland's Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KOs).
Khan explained that he chose McCloskey because he's currently ranked number 5 by the WBA, and that he's someone that his British fans would be interested in seeing. I see otherwise because I think this is one of the purest garbage fights of late. I'm sure my fellow boxing expert, Kevin Iole would agree with me on this one.
Amir should be explaining this to the police or to his lawyer because intelligent boxing fans like myself wouldn't take his reasons for an excuse. We know for a fact that British fighters aren't really in the world class level. We also know that Khan is scared to death of Bradley. Timothy probably reminds Amir of his nightmare first round knockout loss against Breidis Prescott.
Khan might be thinking that McCloskey is an easy fight. Maybe he's right, but as easy as the McCloskey fight can be, he must not forget that he has a glass jaw that could shatter with just one hit from his Irish opponent. Whatever the odds-maker think, I would say this is a pretty even fight.
If Khan somehow luckily beats McCloskey by doing hit-and-run tactics like what he did against Maidana, he might gain some confidence in facing Bradley, and that will be the beginning of his end.
