Victor Ortiz defeats Andre Berto, captures the WBC weltwerweight belt
Written by Svein Olsen Sunday, 17 April 2011 04:30

In another upset that seems to have been haunting slick black fighters as of late, Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs) snatched the WBC welterweight title from previously unbeaten Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KOs) via a twelve round unanimous decision at the Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. The judges' scores were 115-110, 114-112 and 114-111.
The fight was a war right from the very start as both fighters exchanged quick heavy punches, and scored knockdowns against each other. In the first round, Berto was dropped by a very hard left shot followed by combinations from Ortiz. However, Berto was able to recover and caught Ortiz with a right hook that sent Ortiz down.
Rounds 3, 4 and 5 were pretty even as both men traded heavy punches, with Ortiz having slightly better moments due to intelligent fighting. Berto appeared to be getting frustrated by the end of the fourth round. Ortiz continued his domination of Berto in the fifth round as he pushed Berto against the ropes and hurting him with hard punches.
In the sixth round, Berto got back on his game and began battering his opponent. Ortiz was badly hurt with a counter shot From Berto that nearly knocked him out. It appeared that Ortiz was about to be stopped when suddenly the tide turns. Ortiz was able to launch a huge counter that dropped Berto on his back.
The seventh round was another close one as both men went back to trading heavy shots. The eighth and ninth round were idle and slow as both fighters were either clinching, throwing short jabs, or missing many of their punches. In the tenth round, Ortiz was penalized a point for hitting Berto to the back of the head. Ortiz then went on pursuing Berto in an attempt to make the round even.
Ortiz continued rampaging in the eleventh round, catching Berto against the ropes and hitting him with hard shots. Berto appeared to be very exhausted while Ortiz still looked a bit fresh. In the final round, Berto hit Ortiz with a big combination but it didn't stop the challenger from charging and pushing him around the ring.
